Please check the detailed explanation on my video below:*

By using search terms in Japanese only for the topic of interest, is a fun way to learn and revise Japanese vocabulary/kanji. For people like me who cannot study the orthodox way, this activity works in learning/memorizing Japanese.

I am interested in interior decoration and since I stay in Japan sometimes I like to look for decor ideas/products in social media (instagram/facebook/pinterest etc) for a Japanese style home.

What I do is I open Japanese dictionary app/google or any translate app to find vocabulary of that search term in Japanese (nihongo). I try to type that search term using my Kana/romanji keyboard option. I also get a list of options of that search term while I am typing (kanji/hiragana/katakana).

  • What this activity does is that you start recognizing the Japanese vocabulary ( first by looking at translation, then while searching by typing and selecting the desired vocab.

  • Once this becomes a habit you learn more and more vocabulary.

This is image of my instagram page that I started for blogging. I did not know these search terms in Japanese but through my search on instagram in Japanese i am getting to recognize many Japanese terms.

Going further, for example, If I am using Instagram I create and save those photos/clips (that I like) by creating my own folder and naming the folder in Japanese for that particular category.

  • What this activity does is that whenever you open saved instagram folders you start recognizing the Japanese naming /searching categories too.

While searching I also try to see how people name those terms/categories and how they express in writing about those particular topics in Japanese. I gain more knowledge of how Japanese language is used to express thoughts and ideas. (its fun and interesting)!!
