Learning kanji the easy way on youtube app - Tip #1
Updated: Jan 9, 2020
I tried learning the Kanji from various Kanji books and found it very difficult to memorize and successfully retain it in my memory. Then I thought of trying an interesting way to learn kanji.
I would like to share this tip that worked for me, hopefully it might help with people who struggle with retaining kanji in memory and how it sounds.
1. Think about a popular hobby of yours or topics that interest you.
2. Search and Open the YouTube video of that particular interested topic from the list of Japanese videos.
For example - I was interested in learning about communication at work or job or horse riding sport etc so I found out videos in Japanese related to that topic.
3. After opening that video, if you tap the video, you can see a menu of buttons coming at the top right corner on the screen. Click on the ‘3 vertical dots‘ image and a menu pops up.
4. Select the captions from the menu as shown below:
5. Select ‘Captions‘ and one will get the captions sub-menu as shown below :
Here one can select the “Japanese (auto generated) option.
6. After selecting the Japanese auto generated caption view, one can view the Japanese captions being displayed on the screen.
This helps in developing listening skills as well as reading skills in Japanese. It helped me memorize by reading kanji associated with the particular vocabulary and in the context of the particular topic as I was already listening as the kanji was being read. I don’t have to go and check in dictionary how to read that particular kanji. But meaning one has to go and check through other sources.
It also helped me to learn sentence patterns.
One can also learn to use this technique to read Japanese characters faster in JLPT exams. As over a period of time one gets used to reading faster.
Try to select as much as possible various Japanese videos covering different topics.
Hope this tip helps !!
**this caption selection pops out on a lot of YouTube videos. Very few videos do not allow caption selection.
Also the kanji reading might not be 100% accurate so better cross check with the books and dictionary too.
** please visit my YouTube channel and select various videos that I have categorized according to Topics.
